Kayley walked past the tables of homeless people, plastic plates, piled with plastic silverware and leftovers filled her hands. Then suddenly a little kid, dressed in rags ran in front of her, causing her to drop half of the dirty plates and garbage.

"HEY!" Kayley shouted at the kid, but he was already long gone. Kayley snarled and got down on her knees, trying to pick up the garbage scattered all over the floor. "Stupid kid ... no manors ... why am I here anyway? I should be at home right now, sleeping! Stupid grandma, dragging me here for no good reason!" She complained under her breath as she gathered up the trash once again, standing up to head for the garbage bins. "Why cant these people pick up their own trash?" She grumbled throwing the trash in the large garbage bins. She then turned around and looked at the shelter full of homeless people. Almost all of them were dressed in some form of rags, dirty, smelling of trash and other nasty things. Most of them had shopping carts full of junk and other such trash, sitting at their tables. Those Kayley had learned were not to be touched.

An old woman walked up beside Kayley and looked where Kayley was looking. The young girl turned and looked over at her grandmother who was looking around just as she had been.

"What's with the sour face pumpkin?" Her grandmother asked.

"Why do I have to be here Nana?" Kayley asked her grandmother looked up at her.

"Why not? You have more than these people do? Why not give some of your time so they can have just a little more than they normal do?" She asked and Kayley just looked away and let out a huff.

"What ever!" Kayley aid walking back towards the tables of homeless people, looking for empty plates she could take away. As she was looking she saw something, or rather someone. Over at one of the tables was the kid who had run in front of her and caused her to drop all of the trash!

Without a hesitating thought the teen girl headed over in the kids direction. She was going to make him apologize for what he had done! She didn't care if he was homeless or not! But just as Kayley was just about to the talbe she heard the little boy talking.

"Hey mama! Hey mama! Hey mama!" The little boy said trying to get her mothers attention as she ate.

"Yes Toby?" The woman dressed in a red overcoat which was dirty and had a few holes in it, asked the little boy bouncing across the table.

"You know what I'm thankful for?" He asked and Kayley stopped advancing on the boy.

"What Toby?" His mother asked, not looking up from her food.

"I'm thankful for you!" He giggled and his mother looked up and smiled at her little boy.

"I'm thankful for you too Toby." She smiled, but the little boy wasn't don't yet.

"You know what else I'm thankful for mama?!" The little boy exclaimed.

"What?" She asked returning to her food, knowing of the list of things yet to come.

"I'm thankful for the people here who give us food! And for the people give us stuff on the streets, and for all of my friends, and for my cloths and for my warm sleeping bag, and for my fuzzy socks and for Cosmo!" The little boy exclaimed jumping up from his seat and running over to the shopping cart next to their table. He then lifted up a blanket over the top of the car and instantly a black and white dogs head popped out of the cart. The dog instantly started licking the young boys face and he giggled and laughed, petting the dog happily.

"What are you thankful for Cosmo?" The little boy asked the dog after it was done licking him. The dog then let out a bark, as if it had wanted to respond. Toby then laughed and turned back to his mother. "He's thankful for you and me being his family!" The little boy grinned and his mother did the same.

"I'm sure he his." She smiled warmly.

Kayley watched in amazement at the small family. The little boy, he had virtually nothing, yet he was thankful for so much! Everything he had he was thankful for even if he could count those things on his hands! And there Kayely was just sitting there complaining about helping even though she had everything she could ever need!

"Hey you!" The little boy then suddenly called, pulling Kayley form her thoughts.

"Me?" Kayley asked pointing at herself and the little boy giggled as he nodded.

"What are you thankful for?" He asked and Kayley stood there stunned. She really hadn't thought about it at all. She had been to busy groveling all day to even think about it.

"I'm sorry for the bother," His mother suddenly said to Kayley. "You don't have to answer that," She said but Kayley just shook her head.

"No, it's fine." Kayley said. "I just ... I haven't really thought about it all that much." She said and she watched the woman tilt her head to the side curiously.

"So what are you thankful for?" The little boy repeated and this time the dog in the cart barked as if it was curious as well.

"I guess I'm thankful for everything I have." She said. "But right now ... I'm thankful I came here today." She said with a soft smile. "So I could meet wonderful people like you." She said to the two. The woman gained a delightfully surprised look on her face and the little boy giggled and ran over to Kayley and wrapped himself around her torso.

"I'm thankful for getting to meet you too!" The little boy laughed, grinning up at Kayley. "My names Toby!" The little boy suddenly said as he let go of her.

"I'm Kayley." She said with a smile as he looked down at him.

"Well Kayley you are my new best friend, besides Cosmo!" The little boy said and Kayley smiled.

"And you are my new best friend." She smiled at him and the little boy giggled.

The rest of the day the two were inseparable. They walked around together picking up trash from the other homeless people. Most of them Toby knew and introduced them to Kayley. By the end of the day Kayley knew just about everyone in the shelter.

Then it was time to go. Kayley's grandmother walked up to the young girl as she sat on the floor with Toby in her lap and Cosmo in his.

"Kayley, it's time to go home." She said and Kayley instantly looked up at her grandmother with a look of sadness.

"Do we have to?" She asked and her grandmother just nodded.

"Okay." Kayley said solemnly and Toby quickly go off the girls lap letting go of Cosmo, as the girl stood up.

"Kayley?" He asked confused as he stood in front of her.

"Sorry buddy, I have to go now." She said sadly as she ruffled his hair.

"Oh," The little boy said sadly.

"I'll come back soon okay?" She said with a smile and the boy nodded. Then suddenly the little boy turned and ran to his cart and started digging through it. Kalye was instantly confused and wondered what he was doing. Then suddenly the boy stopped digging through the cart and ran back to her.

Then thrusting out his hand he stood there, silently holding his hand out for her. The teen girl looked down at the little boy for a moment before holding out her own hand. The little boy the dropped what he had into her hand and waited for her to respond.

Kaley looked down at her hand and saw a beautiful, multicolored rock that was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

"Toby?" She questioned the little boy but he just smiled up at her.

"So you will never forget me!" He said with a smile but Kayley just shook her head and tried to give it back.

"No, no this is too beautiful! It's yours I don't want to take it from you!" She said but the little boy refused.

"I'm giving it to you!" He said and Kayley looked at the little for a moment before bending down and giving him a hug.

"You are the sweetest little boy I have ever met! I'll never forget you Toby!" She said before letting go of him and smiling. Then suddenly she had an idea. Quickly she unwrapped her scarf from around her neck and wrapped it around the little boy.

"There, so you will never forget me!" She laughed and the little boy looked up at her surprised.

"But Kayley you said this was your favoritest scarf!" He said and she nodded.

"And now it's your favoritest scarf!" She laughed and the little boy smiled and then wrapped his arms around the girls torso hugging her tightly.

"This is the best Thanksgiving ever!" The little boy giggled.

"I agree." Kayley said with a warm smile.

Honstly it's a reminder that not everyone has everything you do and that you really should be thankful for all you have. So this is for them, I hope they found a good meal and a nice warm place to stay for this holiday.

Anyways, so I was going to draw a picture for this holiday ... but then I looked at the peice of paper and was like ... nope I have nothing so I wrote instead. Hopefuly you guys like it!
